Ever wondered how those who say they heard God actually do it? Like, how did you hear Him? What does He sound like? Is it like when two familiar friends are gisting? And then, however you heard the voice, how are you sure it was God’s voice you heard? Who told you it was His voice? Where’s your evidence…? because all this explanation…
Some even say “I heard God, loud and clear”… when you’re not gearing up for an IG Live (inside joke for Tribesmen). You have no idea how many billions of decisions have been made on the strength of “I heard God”; “God told me”; “I know what I heard.” Some, in retrospect, by virtue of time and consequence, were spot on, others… not as much. Why do people generally feel the need to add “God told me” to some of their decisions? Is it because it adds some validity to the weight of their decisions? Or is it because they want no one to question their decisions?
The “God told me” card is one I have seen a lot of people play, especially when they want no accountability from others for their decisions, nor want to take responsibility, should the outcome of their decision go south… after all, it was God who told me. Almost like how Adam held God responsible for his own fall; God, you gave me the woman who I agreed with to fall… It’s all your fault.
But let’s talk about the hearing dynamics…
How is a believer expected to hear from a “God” who neither speaks English nor sign language? He is Spirit and only speaks Spirit. What that Spirit looks like, we have no idea, especially if we’re thinking about Spirit in a 3-dimensional context. Spirit is totally unlike what we may be able to articulate in human language or imagination. In fact, one of the manifestations of this Spirit in our midst is the uttering of totally unintelligible words, specifically selected by Him for our utterance. These words cannot be transcribed into any known human language, and these words are the words of The Spirit. As unidentifiable as it is by men, these exact seemingly “gibberish” words are the clearest articulation of the Will of God in that moment. Clearer than the soundest logic in human communication. The Spirit isn’t to be investigated like we do normal human language.
God is Spirit!
Now, how do we hear God, who is Spirit? Definitely not with our ears, but with the part of us that is in His format. There’s a high chance that the only remote that works with your air conditioner is the one that came with it. Your TV remote won’t turn it on. There has to be a connection. Something in the AC has to be in the remote before they can communicate to each other. Right? In the same vein, the only part of you God will consistently speak to is your spirit. The reason is because your spirit is already in a format that is compatible with God’s Spirit. So, they connect! The Bible says it this way;
The Spirit Himself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: — Romans 8:16 KJV
That mutual witnessing is the established connection. But how does This Spirit speak to me? Through my spirit that has the same format with Him. But how do I hear what God’s Spirit is saying to my spirit? Good question. By going to check out what’s inside my spirit, which God’s Spirit must have deposited in it. Where do I check out what’s inside my spirit?
But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. — 2 Corinthians 3:18 KJV
Your face in the realm of the spirit is your spirit, and whenever you behold this certain mirror or glass, you see your spirit in its truest essence.
But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: for he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. — James 1:22-25 KJV
Apostle James ties it all up for us. He said, when we refuse to do The Word of God, which is the Mirror/Glass where the true identity and essence of our spirit is revealed, we begin to deceive ourselves and start living out a lie. But when we allow the Glass of The Word reveal who our spirits are, we align with that revelation by doing The Word. We live out our true identities. After all, we were born again by The Word. The Word is the source of our essence and connection to God, who is The Spirit.
Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth forever. — 1 Peter 1:23 KJV
That is why we naturally desire it;
As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: — 1 Peter 2:2 KJV
So here’s the framework.
God is Spirit.
He only speaks spirit language to other spirits.
Therefore, God’s Spirit communicates to your spirit.
You can not see, touch, feel or hear your spirit the same way you can hear another person speak.
The only way to know what’s in your spirit is to check the Glass that reveals things inherent in the spirit.
The Glass is The Word.
The Word is Spirit and Life.
God will speak to every new creation in Him via their spirits. The new man’s spirit has only one mail box where God sends everything He sends to him. That mailbox is God’s Word. Every other medium deployed (dreams, visions, other people, prophecies, counsels, etc.) must be checked and ratified by this fundamental channel. Even Jesus would rather you judge Him by this same standard, as seen in the story of the long walk to Emmaus in Luke 24. Anyone who is offended by your insistence to ratify their counsel or prophecy by The Word is clearly not of Christ.
When God has to deploy superlatively dramatic outlets, mediums and channels like a loud voice into your eardrum, a mad man walking up to you, or a recalcitrant donkey... it’s not an experience you want to gloat about. It's feedback on the dullness of your hearing. Volume is often consistent with distance. When God has to be loud and dramatic, it may be that you have been far from His Word; the dominant channel of His communication. Saying you had a dramatic encounter with God actually impresses us as humans because we’re sensual beings, but it doesn’t impress God.
With Elijah, God wasn’t in the dramatic; He was in the “missable” still small voice. It tells you that you must be looking out for His Voice to hear Him. You must go to fetch Him where He dwells. He always speaks, for The Spirit speaketh expressly, but we don’t always seek His voice. Dramatic needs no pursuit, everything stands still when the dramatic kicks in. But when He is in a still, small voice, you only hear Him when you look out for Him. Hearing God requires effort on your side. For you will find Him when you have searched with all your heart. His usefulness to you, depends on your desire for Him.
Too many of us feel bad for never having had some really profound “encounters” with The Glory of God walking into our rooms and shining so brilliantly. That bright light is more comely for your heart whilst you behold the face of Jesus in His Word; where you take heed to a strand of revelation as unto a light that shines in a dark place, until meditation helps fan the embers into flames of explosive brightness, until the day dawns and the daystar arises in your heart. Such encounters leave you in awe and brokenness—the ingredients of a true walk with The Father.
Stay in The Word and you will get all the direction, counsel, and prophecy you need for your life and destiny. No surer Word of Prophecy exists! Every other support cast MUST corroborate the Word, not contradict or replace it! God, in time past, spoke to us for direction through prophets, but in these last days, He has chosen to limit His communication to us to His Son, who is The Word, and there is only one command… Hear ye Him!
