Make Today Count
In each day lies the capacity for us to do something great, but most often, we trade the power/opportunities in each day for the magic of a distant tomorrow. No wonder we have the slang tomorrow never comes.
Scripture teaches us to Redeem each day because the days are evil — Ephesians 5:16
As I began to ruminate on how to make each day count. I see powerful parallels and insight in the beginning of beginnings. Genesis 1:1–31,2:1–2.
Scripture tells us that in the beginning the earth was without form and void and the spirit of God hovered over the face of the deep. Are you at a point where you are clueless, do you have some unanswered where, what, how, who etc? I’m happy to announce that all you need to do is invite the Holy Spirit to brood upon those questions and you will surely find answers.
1 Corinthians 2:10 tells us that the Holy Spirit in us is our divine search engine and he reveals God to us. So please leverage the Holy Spirit for help.
One of the fascinating things about this story is that it gives us insight into how God works and I believe we can draw some insight from this story.
Some insight from the creation story that we can apply to each day.
- List out what to do each day
To-Dos are obviously not new to every one of us, most times the very simple things are all that matter. We see from Scripture that God did certain things each day. Genesis 1: 3 — 5 tells us that the very first thing God created was Light, then the second day was the firmament, the earth and plantation on the third and so on.
It was as if God had a calendar he was working with. If we were to look at God’s Google calendar for creation, we would be amazed to see how he had meticulously planned out each activity for the next seven (7) days. Isn’t that interesting?
The question here is how well do we plan out our activities? One of the things I have noticed is that when there is a mapped-out plan on when and how to do a task the chance of doing that task is very high while if we just leave it for our head to handle, many other important and most unimportant things will just take up our day.
2. Evaluation
Reading the creation story, God was always evaluating each day. We see terms like “….and God saw that it was good.” So, after each day, God evaluated how well he did what he planned to do. The more we evaluate, the more we can measure how far or less we are to our target.
3. Rest
On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested from all his work. — Genesis 2:2 NLT
God rested after finishing all his work, not before.
We live in a generation that seems to brag about how much work we do. We hear things like I haven’t slept in 2 days or I have just slept for 2 hours. As a software developer, one of the lessons I constantly learn is that rest improves my ability to solve problems faster. Most times, I still wear my coconut cap spending hours trying to solve a problem that taking a short nap would have solved in a matter of minutes.
Sometimes rest is the miracle we need.
As we continue this year. I strongly recommend that we make each day count; Plan, Execute, Evaluate and Rest.
