Shut the door on Endor!
All over the world, access to information relevant for the future is literally priceless. This is what scientific, political and economic models are built to simulate. The better you are at predicting future occurrences based on historical patterns, the more in-demand your services will be.
Every business idea needs some form of “feasibility/viability” report; this produces a positive expectation of profitability based on research ever before the venture is embarked upon. This is usually done to forestall losses.
Every new relationship desires some form of “security”; an assurance of the stability of the relationship no matter the unforeseen circumstances that could threaten its very existence. This is to avoid wasting essential emotional energy in a direction that has no future. Every product typically comes with a “guarantee/warranty”, a commitment by the manufacturer that the product will come good on its promises and that a replacement will be given should anything go wrong.
All these are fancy words that help people make decisions today with a sense of confidence about the outcomes of that decision in the future. This is why investors would typically avoid countries with incessant security challenges, even if the market size of that Nation seems so tempting. The unpredictability of future outcomes increases the risks attached to any decision or action taken today.
Merely as human beings, we are incapable of accurately predicting future occurrences. We are limited to history in charting a course for the future. We don’t have the whole pack of cards, a thousand and one things could go wrong at the same time. This human challenge manifests itself in worry, anxiety, depression, discouragement, regrets, hopelessness and sometimes suicidal thoughts.
“Then said Saul unto his servants, seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and enquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit at Endor.” — 1 Samuel 28:7 KJV
What was going on here?
King Saul, the same man who had banished all forms of wizardry and divination from the land of Israel, now desperate to see a witch himself? What was he in search of? He wanted to peep into the future so he could gain perspective and perhaps have some peace.
Verse 5 of the same chapter tells us that when King Saul saw his adversaries, their sheer number and might overwhelmed him, he was afraid and his heart greatly trembled. Based on what he could see, he had no idea how his men would defeat the Philistines. So, out of desperation to at least have some insights, he visited his vomit, he went into something he had vowed he would never come close to… he went to see a witch at Endor!
It is quite astonishing the lengths people are willing to go in order to have a sense of peace and assurance about the future. It is the absence of this peace and the desperate search for it that leads a lot of people into very disturbing habits and lifestyles, addictions and obsessions, and ultimately chains and shackles. People do whatever they need to do to just get a sense of serenity, a high, a feeling… however short-lived, all in an attempt to secure peace.
This is why it is so staggering the absolute bargain we get to have in Christ!!!
It is stupendous the height of ecstasy, joy and delight that awaits the Believer in Heaven, but even more so the Hope and Peace provided here and now. We are of all men, most fortunate, privileged and honoured! Not because we belong to an earthly elite class, but because Christ came to the world, in order to make each one of us into His Heavenly class of citizenship.
That citizenship comes with some inalienable rights and privileges. One of it, is the purest form of what the world will perpetually chase after but never seize upon; it’s called the Peace of God that passes understanding! The beautiful thing about God’s kind of Peace is that you don’t need to know everything about the future in order to have it right now, you just need to know the One who wields the future like a wheel. It’s quite remarkable.
“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you; not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid!” — John 14:27 KJV
King Saul’s heart was greatly troubled and he was afraid when he saw his enemies because he didn’t have this kind of Peace that shuts out fear for life. He had an uncanny neighbour though, whose attitude when in trouble, was the polar opposite… I’m sure you know him!
“When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell. Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident. One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after, that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord and to enquire in his temple.” — Psalms 27:2–4 KJV
This is so so good! I like the way David tries to heap misery upon misery into the context in order to show just how unbending his Peace in the Lord was!
We will have to stop here for today. Next week, we will begin to examine what made David into that kind of man so full of Peace and also share more on exactly how to draw from this supernatural supply of Peace.
But my question to you today is this, do you really have this Peace? Are you scampering from Endor to Endor seeking open doors and answers? Your search can as well stop at the feet of Jesus today. You can shut the door on Endor today!.
